Unlike the attached link, suggesting Mike Pence was horrified to discover a unisex toilet in his own house, this post is not Fake News. It was a no-brainer for us to put unisex facilities in Aldersgate – our new church and community facility. Not only are they more welcoming for gender diverse folk, but they are also much more practical for parents with young children, and for events where there are more of one gender than another (and one set of toilets sits empty while another set has a queue outside them). 

We can thank Margaret Burnet, and a small group of observant church members who spotted that the initial design had slipped into the conventional line-up of men’s and women’s toilets. While it had assumed as a church we might automatically want a conservative approach, there was a clear and loud response that our building must be as inclusive as our beliefs, and the plans were quickly changed.

Construction of Aldersgate has now advanced so that members of the church were able to check out the framing and set up of the unisex toilets, wheelchair accessible toilet and shower facilities at the recent ‘Roof Shout’.
