Should churches get involved in politics? We think they certainly have a role to play in helping people to be informed and to debate the issues prior to casting their vote, and in giving a voice to the disadvantaged. The Aldersgate Centre has recently hosted a Tax Fairness Election Forum organised by EcuAction, a multi-faith ecumenical action group that runs seminars and other events that focus on social justice issues. Following this was a well-attended Election Forum organised by the Living Wage Movement Aotearoa New Zealand, which was connected on line to other meetings in Wellington and Auckland. Most of the major political parties sent representatives with only ACT declining to join either forum and National declining the invitation to the Living Wage forum. Lively discussion took place at both events!
