Staring Troye Sivan, Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Joel Edgerton, “Boy Erased” tells the story of Jared (Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who is outed to his parents (Kidman and Crowe) at age 19. Jared is faced with an ultimatum: attend a conversion therapy program – or be permanently exiled and shunned by his family, friends, and faith. It is the true story of one young man’s struggle to find himself while being forced to question every aspect of his identity.
After the distrbutor’s decision not to release this 2018 film due to concerns about its commercial viability, Diverse Church NZ (an online hub for rainbow people of faith in NZ) has partnered with Spark and NZME to bring the film to selected theatres in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland during each city’s Pride Festival. This comes in the wake of the controversy when it was reported that gay conversion therapy is still regularly being practiced in New Zealand, and two petitions to ban it in this country, totally more than 20,000 signatures, were recently presented to parliament
