Creating Equitable Neighbourhoods

November 11, 2019 @ 6:00-7:30pm

Creating Equitable Neighbourhoods: A Christchurch Conversation, with Dr Antwi Akom – brought to us by Christchurch City Council and Te Putahi – Christchurch Centre for Architecture & City-making.

Interested in seeing a Christchurch as a city of opportunity for all? A place that represents us and in which everyone can belong? While there are often ambitious plans for our built environment, city-makers are fairly silent on diversity, fairness and inclusion.

In this Christchurch Conversation, Professor Antwi Akom explains how cities are commonly planned and designed in ways that can reproduce and exacerbate social inequities based on race, gender, wealth, ability and culture. He will address key questions, such as what does designing for equity look like in the 21st Century? and how can planning and design break down social inequalities and increase participation?

Dr Akom is a Distinguished Professor and Founding Director of The Social Innovation Lab (University of California San Francisco Medical School/San Francisco State University). Previously he co-founded Streetwyzev – a technology and human-centred design firm which supports equitable community development.

Free Event. Doors open at 5:30pm. First in, first served.
