Spirited Conversations – Economics as if people and the planet really mattered

October 09, 2024 @ 6.00pm

“In the long term, we are all dead” is a well-known quote from economist John Maynard Keynes – the author of the 1936 treatise, The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money. Beginning with this quote, Dr Ganesh Nana (former Chair, Productivity Commission) will lead us live on-line at our next Spirited Conversation on Wednesday 09 October in Wānanga Room, Aldersgate, 309 Durham Street North, Christchurch Central.

He will draw on considerable experience in both the public and private sector to discuss his perspective of the market economy being inherently short-sighted, and not well-placed to confront the long-term challenges of climate change, inequity, geopolitics, and demography that face society today. Further, the inherent focus of the market economy on individuals, overlooks advantages of collective approaches confronting these challenges.

As usual, following the conversation, we can continue the discussion over dinner at a nearby restaurant (less than two blocks away), for those who enjoy kai with their korero.
