While a ‘third sex’ is common in many traditional cultures, who knows how people in ancient texts
might have actually identified themselves – especially in terms of modern labels and concepts. In
the end, people of faith don’t need to rely on queer and gender-diverse accounts of characters in
the bible to validate our inclusive understanding. We can anchor our faith on deeper Biblical themes,
such as: we are all made in the image of God; we are fearfully and wonderfully made; we are loved;
all are included, especially the outsider and marginalised; we are made to live life in all its fullness.
