Spirited Conversations – The Real Story on Puberty Blockers

March 11, 2026 @ 6.00pm

Just before Christmas, following an application by the Professional Association for Transgender Health Aotearoa (PATHA), the High Court granted an urgent injunction temporarily suspending the Government’s planned ‘puberty blocker’ ban. The substantive decision to overturn the ban will likely be heard this year. Dame Sue Bagshaw has agreed to lead a Spirited Conversion on what’s the real story with puberty blockers. Are they actually “safe and reversible” or not? What are the physical and mental risks for young people denied access to them? Is the proposed ban more based on “moral panic” than the science? Dame Sue is a doctor and senior lecturer in paediatrics with University of Otago who specialises in the health needs of young people. She is a Fellow of the Australasian Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine, and chairs the Youth Hub Trust.
