Spirited Conversations – Are our housing policies failing Ōtautahi?

September 09, 2026 @ 6.00pm

Your chance to engage face-to-face with two leading local advocates, who’ve been in the news on the impact of housing policies on our city and its people.

Jill Hawkey, Executive Director of Christchurch Methodist Mission, works with homeless and inadequately housed Cantabrians. She says that homelessness is rising, including among the elderly, hundreds are waiting for decent housing and government policies and inaction is making it worse.

Councillor Nathaniel Herz Jardine warns that Christchurch risks becoming a hollowed-out ghost town, with nearly 500 new houses built in Central Christchurch last year but only 50 new residents – because of unregulated short stay accommodation that jacks up prices for renters and first home buyers.

Hear Jill and Nathaniel’s proposals for what needs to be done to adequately house our people, and join in this important conversation.

This seminar is part of a series of monthly Spirited Conversations hosted by Durham Street Methodists, as part of our commitment to bringing critical thinking, and ethical & spiritual insights, to important issues of the day for our city and its diverse people. There is no charge for attending. Just turn up and be part of the conversation.
