Church Not-As-Usual

“What if church invited people to come tell what they already know of God instead of coming to learn what they are supposed to believe? What if it blessed people for what they are doing in the world instead of chastening them for not doing more at church? What if the church’s job were to convince people that God needs them working in the world more than God needs them sitting in the pew?” (Barbara Brown Taylor)

That’s the kind of church community we aspire to be – a place of radical inclusion, where everyone — no exceptions — is accepted and valued and given the invitation to help take the lead. Women, men and those who don’t find those labels helpful; whatever our disability, limitation or impairment; old, young, and everyone in between; gay, lesbian, straight and asexual; Māori, Pakeha, Pasefika, migrant, refugee, old-timer, and new comer; faithful follower, honest doubter and convinced sceptic — all are welcome at the table at our central city church. Nau mai, haere mai. We are glad you are here.

We are not the biggest church in town, nor the wealthiest, nor do we have the flashest programmes or best productions. But we are thoroughly committed to caring for each other, serving our city, and helping each other be more faithful followers of the radical, counter-cultural Way of Jesus of Nazareth. We are a welcoming, inclusive church. If you are looking for a Christchurch church where you will be welcomed, then come along, we would love to meet you.

Check out what we are doing for Pride Month 2026. All are welcome to join us for any of the activities!

Spirited Conversations – A campaign to free Aotearoa from poverty

StreeTs Ministry

During the period between the demolition of the old Durham Street Methodist Church and the opening of the new Aldersgate Centre, we supported StreeTs Ministry, an exciting outreach to the city. The aim of StreeTs was to engage with, develop, resource and build community within the central city of Christchurch – from the “streeties” and tourists to the business owners, professionals, office and hospitality workers, and inner city residents. The gift of presence, without the perils of advice.
